    On guru purnima we Indians revere our mentors and teachers who make our life respectable and valuable. In Hinduism, guru is the one who is supreme than God. It is said to be the source that connects the individual to the Almighty. The “Guru” word derived from ancient Sanskrit roots "Gu" which means darkness and "Ru" which means the one who removes the darkness. Hence the complete meaning of guru is a person who removes the darkness from within his students and leads them to the light of wisdom and ultimately introduces them to God. The ones who impart temporal wisdom such as school teachers and college lecturers are also felicitated on this day.

    The day of Guru Purnima is traditionally the time when seekers offer the Guru their gratitude and receive his blessings. Guru Purnima is also considered an especially beneficial day to starting teaching. The importance of “Guru “and “Guru Purnima” is explained in the below Sanskrit verse

     Guru Govind donu khade, ka ke laagu paay,
    Balihari Guru Aapne Govind diyo bataay

    It means that one should always bow to the Guru before Govind (God) as it is the Guru who showed me the God.

    About Guru Poornima

    Guru Purnima is also known as Vyasa Purnima or Sage Ved Vyas purnima. Maharishi Ved vyas was a popular maharishi and the author of Mahabharata and Brahma Sutras. He was born on this day. In Buddhism it is believed that on this day Gautam Buddha taught his disciples and got the path of enlightenment. Buddhists celebrate Guru Purnima by meditating and observing uposatha


    The Guru Purnima Mantra and Its Importance
    A mantra that is specially used on this day is:



    || Gururbrahmaa Gururvishnuh Gururdevo Maheswarah |
    Guruh-Saakshaat Parabrahma Tasmai Shrigurave Namah ||

    It means that the Guru is Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh (Shiva), revere the Guru who is a manifestation of Parabrahma, the Supreme God.

      Wake up early in the morning (Brahmamuhurta) to pray and chant hymns to the Guru..

      People should indulge in meditation..
