Reason of Dev Diwali

After leaving king Bali, the Lord rejoined the devas on this day. The devas celebrated Lord arrival in and thus Dev Diwali came into being.

Tripurari Purnima. The 7th Skandh of the Shrimad Bhagwat cites the story. With the help of Tarak and Vidyunmaali, a demon named Muy daanav constructed three aerial ‘purs’ – cities; of gold, silver and iron, which he gave to the demons. With these, the demons flew wherever they wished, destroying the places where they landed. The devas then approached Lord Shiv for succor. Another reference cites that Naradji instigated the 3 demons to destroy Kailas – Lord Shiv’s abode. An angered Shiv then destroyed the three purs. Henceforth he became known as Tripurari. The devas rejoiced on this day, hence Dev Diwali celebrated.

dev_diwali

During Dev Diwali, a cultural festival called ‘Ganga Mahotsav is celebrated in Varanasi. Prabodhini Ekadashi is the important day in these celebrations. Large number of people throngs to Dasaswamedh Ghat to witness the event.

Kartik Snan and Deepdaan are main rituals performed during Dev Diwali. At the time of sunrise devotees do Kartik Snan and in the evenings they perform Deepotsav. Deepotsav is lightening Diyas or earthen lamps. Deepotsav is an eye-catching celebration on Dev Deepavali day. ‘Ganga Aarti is the grand event to participate on this day. Large number of people performs Aarti to Ganga Mata amidst the multitude prayers and mantras.

During this dayPushkar Mela is also celebrated in Pushkar town of Rajasthan on Dev Diwali day.

The festival usually falls every year on the 13th night/14th day in the Krishna Paksha of the month of Maagha (as per Shalivahana) or Phalguna (as per Vikrama) in the Hindu calendar.
The festival is exclusively dedicated to Lord Shiva which is known by hundreds of names.
Maha Shivratri is the day to rejoice…to pray to the almighty for wellness. Almost all Hindus throughout the world offer prayers in the morning/evening and some observe fasting throughout the day.

A Festival Significant for Women :

Shivratri is considered especially auspicious for women. Married women pray for the well being of their husbands and sons, while unmarried women pray for an ideal husband like Shiva, who is the spouse of Kali, Parvati and Durga. But generally it is believed that anyone who utters the name of Shiva during Shivratri with pure devotion is freed from all sins. He or she reaches the abode of Shiva and is liberated from the cycle of birth and death.

Dhanwantari is believed to be the father of medical science. He is the pioneer of ayurveda and he is the first ayurvedic surgeon aswell. He is believed to be the brother of Goddess of wealth Laxmi.

The origins of the ancient healing science known as Ayurveda are lost in cosmic antiquity. According to the ancient text Caraka-samhita, this “Science of Life and Longevity” is eternal and is revealed in each universe in each of its infinite cycles of creation and destruction. This healing science is generally revealed by great sages or demigods.

Occasionally, the Supreme Lord Himself descends as the avatara (incarnation) Dhanvantari and re-inaugurates the tradition of Ayurveda. This extremely rare appearance of God is recorded in the Vedic literature of ancient India.
